SIXTEEN

I was mostly kidding when I told Doc I wanted to pack Stingray full of weapons and stuff. But, there was one gun I just had to have. While we were away, a very fierce and war-avid race called the Davrid had developed the most bitchin’ rifle. The Excellon-6. It fired a gamma ray laser, like the one in my finger. But it had one thousand times the output. What’s more, the gun did that without instantly overheating, and the fusion packs enabled you to fire one round per second, indefinitely. Fully loaded, it weighed less than twenty kilograms. Can you imagine? The gun was what we used to call in the military high speed, low drag. Dude, I needed two, maybe three of’em. I pictured myself going into battle with one rifle in each arm, and crisscrossed bandoleers stocked with fifty-caliber cartridges. Sure, the gun didn’t fire fifties, but I’d look so badass it’d be worth the added weight.

As I was uncrating the four Excellon-6s I settled on, Toño stood over my shoulder, helicoptering. “I’m confident you will tell me why we require four of those obscene weapons.”

“What? Two apiece, you and me. Sheesh, Doc, it’s simple math.”

“Simple math for simple minds.”

What was that supposed to mean? These were state-of-the-art killing machines. We were soldiers on a suicide mission. A + B = C. I should have brought some back up Excellon-6s, now that I thought of it.

“I fear your hesitation in returning a witty jab suggests you are considering obtaining more of those monstrosities.”

“What? Doc, that’s crazy talk. If we can’t kill whatever with two apiece, we aren’t going to survive with a bunch back on the ship, shiny and in a box.”

“Two apiece? Do you hallucinate I would be caught dead with one of those, let alone two? I need to recalibrate your logic buffers.”

“Dude, we’re going after viable Cleinoids, here. You want to pepper them with insults and misleading promises?” I was shaking my head in disbelief.

“First, do not ever address me as dude. Unless I appear on a horse wearing new chaps and a white cowboy hat, never apply that term to me. Second, it was your idea to take on ancient gods with no added help or backup. Third, when we confront our foes, I will be carrying what I have for many, many years. A plasma rifle and a rail pistol. So far, no one has killed me yet.”

“Time marches on, Dr. Luddite. These,” I gestured emphatically at my new toys, I mean tools, “are the future.”

“No. Those are expensive, silly looking guns designed to catch the eye of males suffering from testosterone poisoning. What is more, they are unproven in combat. Never disregard Murphy’s Laws of War. The complexity of a weapon is inversely proportional to the IQ of the weapon’s operator.”

“Hater,” I grumbled. “These are super weapons and they’ll work fine in the field.”

“I have two things to say. One, knowing you has been a pleasure. Two, can we go now?
